What are the reasons to study computer science?...
From an
intellectual perspective, it is an extremely rewarding major that brings
together literally any other discipline you want to. Do you have a
knack for biology? Cool, pair that up with computer science and now you're into the
field of bioinformatics. Maybe you have a thing for the arts and might
even be an artist yourself? How about creating a platform that allows
artists to share (Soundcloud comes to mind) their work with the public
or amongst friends. Are you into numbers? Perfect, math and computerscience go
together like bread and butter.
From a career perspective, computer science opens many doors in the non-technical world as well.
You'll find throughout your studies that you have become a much more abstract and logic-based problem solver which can be applicable in any facet of life. Any sort of career will depend on your ability to rationalize problems and break it down to solve it(algorithm) from the ground up. When you have a background in breaking a problem up into a bunch of lines of code, you truly understand how things work and why they work that way. You will see patterns, algorithms, classes/objects and methods in real world scenarios all of which make you a more organized problem solver.
From a personal perspective, it is one of the few majors where after even only a semester or two you can truly start to put your knowledge to use. Build a mobile application to flex your newly acquired programming muscles and impress your friends. Build a website for a non-profit to put your talents to good use for the community. These sorts of projects will increase your own learning capacity and even give you a leg up come graduation time when you're looking for employment.
The field of computer science is so diverse and opens so many doors to practically any other field whether directly or indirectly. There will not be less computers tomorrow, so jump into this extremely exciting field where it can be as abstract, or as practical as you would like!!!
